Summary after two months of Action Short of Strike: It's not necessarily easy to work less. Undeniable advantage: I have actual weekends now, for the first time in years.

But also: Prioritising tasks is a lot harder. Things I want to do but are not high priority for my employer just don't happen (e.g., outreach). Tasks get delayed way past their deadlines, which leads to conflicts or fear of conflicts or guilt.

My usual mechanism to avoid deadline-induced guilt is simply to burn a few hours in the evening or on Saturday. Since I am not doing this anymore, it piles up. But, on the other hand, weekends. So, there.

I've learned recently that the consequence for missing deadlines due to working a sensible number of hours is merely that things get done late. I still feel the guilt, but people deal with it, and maybe if we all did this it would be good in the long run.

Sure, many of these things are paper tigers and don't bite very hard. Others though are solved by putting more work on other people. And we do have some hard deadlines were failures have severe consequences down the road.

Yes, it is hard to know when a deadline is real and when it's arbitrary. I hope I'm not getting it too wrong...
