So, story time from icfp. To begin, when I was quite a bit younger (14 I think?) I started learning about Haskell. I really loved some of the programming language theory that seemed to be a part of the community and I wanted to learn more.

Mine involves mild swearing and Michael Gove.

I was a clueless grad student at my first POPL in 2012. SPJ was at PLMW (the first one!) to give his standard "how to write a paper" talk. As he began the talk, he joked, "I was going to call this talk 'how to get your paper into POPL', but POPL rejected my paper this year."

For most people in the audience, this was probably a mildly funny quip, but for me, to hear SPJ stand there and say "my paper was rejected" was mind-blowing. It was an incredibly important thing for me to hear and had more of an impact on me than anything else at PLMW that year.
