One thing that really impresses me on modern computers: the speed of PDF rendering. We take it for granted. But the complexity of what's going on under the hood is impressive.

When I wrote my PhD thesis 25+ years ago, it took several minutes to Latex, and it was possible to make a cup of tea while waiting for the result. I just tried it on my mac desktop, and it now takes 0.2 seconds. Progress!

Out of curiosity I just tried to build mine, and it turns out it can't handle the .ps files I was using for images now. So that's another kind of progress, I suppose.
