I love the Idris developments, but this thread gives a different perspective and gives interesting critiques.https://twitter.com/pressron/status/1115575346315841537 …

Idris's "crazy tooling" is an old (decades?) party trick that's never really gotten anywhere. It's not more effective (though it yields more impressive demos) than other code generation tools, that are also not incredibly useful.

Yeah. And I think @edwinbrady has like, presented it as that kind of? Like not the important thing but a fun party trick you can do without very much effort, given that the things that are in place are in place...

I've never sold it as anything more than a trick for small programs. The important thing is the interaction and feedback. The quoted thing, as far as I can see, is criticising Idris for not doing a thing that it's not claiming to do...

I think what's cool is what is achievable in this type system with what is essentially an ad-hoc weekend hack. If we learn to use types more effectively, there's so much more we could do! I think this will start to be really effective with, e.g., implementing complex protocols.

Yeah, that's the impression I've gotten from your talks: More about this kind of thing being within reach, without reaching *very* far. Less about the actual trick.

(I think maybe the actual trick is sometimes made more into the point by people in audience. Because, well, it *is* cool. Criticism may be related to that.)

(In my experience things are seldom about what they're about and like this complicates some things. Bla bla.)

Perhaps I need to do a better job of explaining that it's more about enabling a conversation with the machine. Though the trick is very much a part of that.

That is: the machine knows a lot of stuff that can help you, and should not keep it to itself. However small it is, writing an "obvious" thing automatically lets you worry about more interesting things. I'm certainly finding this useful in my efforts on Idris 2.

That’s exactly how I sell Idris’ interactive editing. The compiler knows a lot, and can help if we let it! This is one example of letting it help, let’s find more cool ways.
