I tried duolingo for japanese and I felt it didn't make any sense in what it was assuming I should/could be able to identify right from the start. Maybe I'm too stupid though.

If you have an iPhone, the Human Japanese apps are good. I use Anki on my laptop to drill hiragana and katakana. Where are you headed?
