I count "being unfussy about one's development environment" to be a professional virtue, personally. Both in terms of software and hardware.

I've also gone back to mostly working on a laptop in recent years. I have a monitor in the office but I don't plug into it.

FWIW, the kind of developing Carmack does probably requires more screen real estate than PL-oriented dev.

I used to use two until I realised I was just using one for time wasting most of the time. I'm already adept at time wasting :).
