Within hours of announcing the first pre-alpha of my first major OSS, I understand why people burn out on OSS. The first bit of feedback I got was "why are you doing X, you should improve Y", when X is the WHOLE POINT of the project, with Ys designed to be switched and changed.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) there aren't many serious competitors to the tool that I'm developing, so I'm unable to say "why not just use that then". That said, the temptation to say "why don't you build your own one" is very strong. Either response feels a bit toxic sadly.

The other temptation is to say "Patches Welcome" which is also a bit too confrontational. Although there are polite ways to say it.
