I like it for workshops, to get the ideas out there. But I only like big events for catching up with folk. Otherwise, journals could use more submissions. So I think I agree...

Maybe something like the HiPEAC model would be good? Where a yearly conference presents the papers submitted (and accepted) to the ACM TACO journal in the year before the conference. The associated workshops are also quite enjoyable, and very varied!

I agree for workshops - I like hearing the work-in-progress stuff, and I think it provides a great venue for people to get feedback on their work. I do worry about how workshops would be supported without related conferences though.
