Imho, the conference model (at least in systems) hurts "good science", as it encourages authors to rush to meet deadlines, rather than thinking and evaluating carefully.

I like it for workshops, to get the ideas out there. But I only like big events for catching up with folk. Otherwise, journals could use more submissions. So I think I agree...
