Yesss!!! Remember that we teach students first...”research says..” is nice, but we also need to make sure we’re reaching our students, too!

So frustrating today...heard a student say “this is the first time I know what’s going on in this class” and that’s when I was speaking in English 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

A1 | Management in language classes looks, sounds, and feels different, too. Ideally there's noise, games, music, laughter, all of the above, and that can cause some to raise an eyebrow. But whatever, they can raise up eyebrows, we'll keep raising up students! 🔥

There should be a get into teaching advert that shows a teacher asking their class to write the date and underline it followed by a child immediately asking if they should write the date and underline it.

Quotes from 1 of my fav authors, Toni Morrison, 4 the new year/decade: “We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.” & “If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, you must be the one to write it.

Hi sorry to be this person but when you refer to a decade by only the last two numbers, the apostrophe functions as a replacement for the first two, like in any contraction—it's not possessive. Eg: The '60s. NOT the 60's. It's about to be the '20s, NOT the 20's.

Sunday evenings really aren’t that bad when you don’t have to go to school the next day.

A student criticized me recently for saying “my bad“, stating that adults should not try to use “their” language. Kids, that is not your term, and you did not come up with it. It has been our bad longer than you have been alive.

Teaching has this weird effect where I absolutely hate waking up Monday morning for work, but once I walk in the building I actually enjoy being there.

I'm afraid, from my experiences, that the we push kids to annotate the text without helping them to make real meaning of what they read. Our kids can underline and highlight for days and match it to the question. But, are we pushing them to synthesize what they've read?

When a white American can speak more than one language: “Wow, they are so smart!” When an immigrant or Person of Color can speak more than one language: “Speak English!” The difference is racism.

A loving nod to the teachers/scholars/grad students that took a to-do list of work home over the break and literally did none of it. It’s fine. We needed it. Rest up 👌🏾

It’s always fun to ask why teachers are too dumb to understand research, instead of asking what the research may have missed that practitioners understand.
