Here’s a mind trick I’m gonna try. I’m moving the Reddit app icon into a folder, and in its place I’ll put the Books app icon. So whenever I muscle memory go to open Reddit, I get to read a book instead!

If you’re a designer and can’t code - learn it! You’ll be a much better designer; you’ll be able to communicate with engineers in their language, make tweaks, suggest implementation strategies and design things that have better chances of being implemented.

Some takeaways: If you’re an engineer, don’t take your skills for granted, it’s such an amazing and powerful thing to learn and it’s not easy! You help create miraculous things unimaginable only a few decades ago!

Also, having the ability as a designer to go update an asset, a color, change a font, spacing, an animation or even a whole view is so liberating. I always feel a little guilty asking an engineer to go move something by that pixel - so I do it when I can.

Best of all, learning to code has given me the ability to empathize with engineers (or call them out). I now have a better idea of how hard something is to build / and my designs have gotten better and more implementable.

I still don’t count myself as an engineer because I know there’s so much more to engineering than I can do... but I love contributing to the Xcode repo with simple enough things.

A year or so later I was so fortunate to join the Xcode team as a designer - working on the tool I had become so fond of. I still pinch myself sometimes.

2 years later I had written an entire internal prototyping framework. With classes, and structs, extensions, formatters, protocols and all. And started making cool prototypes with it!

I was mostly interested in UI / animations for prototyping. I got this PDF book from and was able to make simple things, and I felt powerful - I had a foundation to build on.

Then Swift came along... I knew that would be my opportunity to learn, but there were very few tutorials. Stack Overflow was still all obj-c. I had to wait until almost swift 3 before there were good tutorials...

It’s easy to take for granted once you know, but finding the answers was not easy. I wanted to learn iOS, Objective-C was too hard for me - like if Yoda got old and started repeating himself and then decided write a language using part hieroglyphs part English...

It took me a long time to learn to program. I started learning Framer.js back when it was easy. 4-5 years ago I was googling “what’s a class” - all the names confused me, methods vs functions, parameters vs arguments, constant and var, object and class and struct and protocols…

Am I tired because I didn't sleep well? Is it because weather is foggy and dull? Because I'm depressed? Am I sick? Do I have an undiagnosed terminal illness? Did they ship the decaf version in the caffeinated drink by accident?

What should be the name for a designer who codes? Devsigner being the one for a developer who designs.
