With the European Union and Canada now largely open to vaccinated travelers, the US stands increasingly alone in leaving its borders mostly closed. My latest on the strange political dynamics that are keeping US borders shut.

Been talking to US Senators about the letter from Canada on the EV tax credit & threat to suspend bits of USMCA A caveat later but here is the most memorable quote From Ohio’s Sherrod Brown: “I don’t care.” Me: About the EV issue? Him: “I don’t care what Canada thinks.”

Now looking like: USA: no new travel bans for Omicron. UK: dropping existing bans as Omicron already widespread. Canada: doubling down on existing bans, considering bans on ALL foreigners, never mind that O is widespread.

The world is indebted to South Africa for its impressive and quick work on this research, and for sharing the findings widely (even at the risk of travel bans).

Did any media other than ⁦⁩ have this kind of direct channel to Trump’s chief of staff?

This is a pretty high-risk strategy from Ottawa. And at the moment I don’t hear many (any?) voices in Congress or the Biden administration standing up for Canada’s (or Mexico’s) interests on this one.

Scrambling last minute to find care for my 3 year old, why? Because I have an exam for my career and seeing her dad in the 🇺🇸 has banned her from daycare for 2 weeks. Stable childcare or seeing her Dad, that’s the choice in 🇨🇦.

Just 3% of unvaccinated Republicans believe getting vaccinated is a collective responsibility (compared to 26% of vaxxed Repubs and 81% of vaxxed Dems). Means almost no unvaccinated Repubs agree they have some responsibility to their community despite facts of COVID transmission.

If confirmed, this would be the best news since the onset of the pandemic — a highly contagious but not very severe strain of Covid. After nearly two years, I am really hoping this holds up.

Though I should make clear that Trump’s USTR was also an outlier here.

This is actually quite shocking. Historically USTR argued forcefully that the U.S. should uphold its trade obligations. It would lose sometimes (to Congress or the White House). But it would not advocate for blatant violations of trade agreements.

Travel bans are notoriously "sticky". Easy to impose and very hard to undo. They are imposed because they are highly visible, but they do very little. Omicron is already in Canada. Let's not pretend that Namibians are carrying it any more than Europeans.
