The whole time, was still VERY deep in tech—not just supplementing income but also trying to change the way ‘legal was done’—there is a real market here that should be poised for disruption. So, not like I wasn’t plowing away trying to marry the two.

Long story short, I was very fortunate to meet a lot of really great, talented people in immigration space, like @MatthewHoppock, who I love and miss always. And some of them (including Matt!) have stuck by me, despite my propensity to over promise and under deliver on big ideas.

And because there is a real, but nascent, movement in legal to bridge law and tech (follow @inspiredcat), and I was/am able to straddle that divide pretty well, I was called a ‘unicorn’ by folks on both sides—not true, but very kind.

So, after that first paid gig, I increased my rate to $65. That was my rate at Jan 2019. Goal was to average $75 for whole year by years end. But... Just kept killing it, driving value for my clients, and increasing rate after each gig... so, going to beat goal real bad

Note—and this is key—I am, BY NO MEANS, the most technically skilled developer out there—I’m good and have gotten a lot better—we do some cool shit (cc @PonyLinnell) but what sells me is that I get the business side and have lots of experience talking to clients.

In the legal world, lawyers are trained to put the interests of their clients first and WAY before their own. It’s, literally, a matter of ethics. I carried that forward with me, and, that, imho, has been the key to success. I deliver a lot of bad news.
