textures have to be in same folder as the bfres and just change the texture type in 3DS Max when you're running the script ui
the dds files that i extracted give the error "invalid header", and also, is there an alternative to this? i don't have photoshop.

probably but I haven't checked, XnConvert supports DDS but half of them don't convert right, try noesis? http://richwhitehouse.com/index.php?content=inc_projects.php …
