a lot of software code would check which version of windows it was running on, and then do things differently depending on that. some checks only looked at whether the name of the version started with "windows 9", which would catch both "windows 95" and "windows 98"

true, although i can’t see that many programs using the product name to get the version, but who knows maybe it really was a big problem

I had to deal with a piece of old software that was looking for Service Pack 2 in the product description. I had to reghack the machines to be Windows 7 Service Pack 2 so it would open.
