Walgreens at 16th/Mission closed recently due to theft. That means that our lower income, senior and neighbors with mobility impairments need to schlep up to 23d st.

Maximus had probably been planning to back out for some time. Hwa Lei and Mission Hunan are still in business. BK and City Club closed due to pressure. Sources at Walgreens said the theft was what did them in. So many products were behind locks towards the end.

So when people say "don't prosecute poor people for theft," we actually do have to balance out the impacts of that on our vulnerable neighbors for real. The nonprofit crowd was nowhere to be found to preserve a critical health resource.

And Joel and his team in the pharmacy had been there for decades and provided more para-medical consultations to health care access challenged neighbors than any of the nonprofits did. That pre-chain Walgreens was a resource for this corner of the North Mission.
