"If you’re in with the in crowd, you can find out which of the two [Annals] papers is currently believed by the elders." So, , which one of the papers is currently believed? I don't hold with such secrets being kept to the "in crowd".

Google Dataset Search is now officially out of beta. "Dataset Search has indexed almost 25 million of these datasets, giving you a single place to search for datasets & find links to where the data is." Nice work, Natasha Noy and everyone else involved!

My 5yo asked, “How big is a wolf?” So I Google it... Google’s first result is the option (in browser!) to place a realistic wolf in the room with us so we can walk around it and see for ourselves. Magical. The closest I have felt to a Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer.

Here's a thread surveying some 'classic' work on . Lots of people seem to be discussing this right now, but with partial references to the whole story. My aim is to highlight some of the philosophical and psychological issues in the history of the concept. 1/

Grateful for the yearly holiday bring-to-reality that kicks me soundly out of this peculiar AI tech bubble. Windows is a thing. Most people have no clue what a gradient is, and no interest to learn. C++, Java, FORTRAN, and legacy systems run the world, with no plan to migrate.

Let's keep writing, every day, to to remind them we haven't forgotten their perfidy and aren't going to (nor their bullshit "clarification"). If we stop writing, they're going to think they weathered the storm.

I could not agree more. It's worth noting that many of us pay those ridiculous fees with NSF project money. Yet another form of wealth transfer from the taxpayers to ACM's coffers.

And as somebody mentioned: forcing academics to pay the something like $2000 for open access doesn't count. That's revenue replacement, not costs. And if anything is firmly against broadening participation and inclusion in CS, one of ACM's stated goals.
