This evening JCMT staff are hard working to connect the JCMT with telescopes in Greenland and South Korea as part of the East Asian VLBI Network. This work will rely on the Nāmakanui instrument working at 1.3mm 📡 📡 📡

🌟🌟 We invited Heather Bottom, a Systems Engineer for the Mars 2020 spacecraft to come check out our JCMT Remote Operations Control Room, and suddenly we had one of the most fun impromptu pizza parties to date! 🍕 🎉 🚀🚀 💪 🙋

EAO Staff had so much fun today at the base facility with 77 kindergartners from Mt. View Elementary. We sang songs about stars, made our own constellations, and thanks to our daycrew many of the kids got to touch snow for the very first time! ✨❄️😊

In February we will be working on some improvements to our new instrument that takes images at wavelengths of 1.3mm. In order to undertake this work we need to make sure we have all the bits and pieces necessary. Here are some of the photos from the preparation discussion.

Today marks 34 years since the Challenger disaster. On Saturday the annual Onizuka science day was in Hilo and EAO along with the other Maunakea Observatories and science community celebrated all things astronomy and space related!

We had first aid training for staff this morning. A huge mahalo to Island CPR for the training. As we say at the JCMT "Safety First"!

Last night we had excellent weather on Maunakea for the first night of testing. Weather appears good today for a second test. This is the second time we have used Nāmakanui for VLBI and staff are happy with the instrument's performance ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Our remote observer, Callie, captured a few images of the sunset last night through our summit webcams. The beautiful light bouncing of the snow truly makes for a beautiful view on . It is winter in Hawaii!

Our newest instrument - Nāmakanui - our 1.3mm instrument was having issues that meant some of it's hardware needed working on. Our engineering team spent the week upgrading the amplifiers alongside other tasks. Much needed as we have an test run next week!
