When people tell me that they loved HP and it's ruined for them, I always recommend The Young Wizards by Diane Duane. I think the author was originally known for Star Trek fiction but TYW is such a good series.
I’ve heard about this. One thing I enjoyed about HP was that it got slightly dark but kept an interesting feel of comaraderie throughout. Does this have that kind of vibe?

It does, absolutely. The main characters remain the same, and there are a few fixture characters within the cast (family members, wizarding friends), but each book has a new environment and cast of support, all of whom tend to be super cool and well written.
