I'm talking about both, but certainly including the former. Are politicians not individuals with values?

Obviously there are limitations & gray areas. Doubtful anyone who voted Trump could be considered "progressive" for (extreme) example

Well, at least we agree that "progressive" is an objective enough that a Trump voter can't be one.

If Susan Collins called herself progressive, would that make her progressive?

*I* wouldn't, but if person who called themselves progressive voted for her, I wouldn't say it'd auto-revoke their "prog badge", depending

Sure, I'm with you so far. And the same is absolutely true, imo, for a person in a swing state grudgingly voting for Clinton.

But Clinton herself & people who strongly supported her either aren't prog or I need a new word to make clear- we're not politically close.

I'm not on the verge of voting for a candidate like Clinton. A few small tweaks aren't a compromise I can accept.

(Also true of Obama- I did vote for him in his first election but not in the second after it was clearer what his politics were).
