I know I should just have an answer to this as a part-editor part-freelancer but: Is it better, when hearing no, to get reasons why?

why it doesn't work, in my subjective opinion, for this particular venue, with its needs/parameters
I take explanationa as a signal that the editor wants more of my work and is trying to guide me towards pitches/submissions that would work.
