Can Slate really not see how profoundly unhelpful "queer" is in this context? http://www.slate.com/blogs/outward/2017/04/20/gay_and_bi_men_in_chechnya_need_your_help_here_are_some_options.html …
In my first draft I consciously used "suspected/accused of being gay" instead of gay throughout the piece. I do, to an extent, get it.

It's difficult tho bc anything that smacks of euphemising or denying gay/queer identities hits a really big nerve for an American audience.

To the point where it can come down to "Do I cover this story at all?" since Americans are all but allergic to int'l issues already.

As usual with these things, I'm mostly griping about the headline. What was so wrong with "LGBT", again?

Check. I'll keep that in mind, next time. (I don't write my headlines, but I do get input on them).
