This is so fascinating! I grew up with mostly immigrants and had no idea this was common. Is it just nationalism? Something else?
And thanks so much for recommending an Asian book. There is so much systemic exclusion/marginalization of non-Western languages.I'm not sure I have enough distance to know- I see it in many Americans, though. I believe it's most of us.
