This is so fascinating! I grew up with mostly immigrants and had no idea this was common. Is it just nationalism? Something else?

You're right. Ppl elsewhere have their own culture + US culture (thru books and films). US dominates in a way but isn't overwhelming.

Being brought up in a more dominant culture is impoverishing in a way one has no way of noticing when it's happening.
