There's a trend of dismissing otherwise troubling developments in terms of who has power in gov because anyone is better/safer than Trump.
However, if you see Trump's election as a symptom of an ailing/distressed democracy, these moves are much more troubling.

When Trump goes against established norms, he makes it less likely those norms will be returned to. The country will be harder to restore.
