I live on the cusp of American inequality. 1/2 of ppl I know are amazed my wife will be making $50K. 1/2 see it as a modest starting point.
And of course everyone I know still basically believes themselves to be middle class, getting by reasonably.

Although I was brought up to expect affluence, I've never been well off as an adult. Pushing 40 I mostly assumed that wouldn't be my life.
