So I know it’s Sat night so it shouldn't be “serious twitter time (TM)” but I finally put my finger on something that has been bothering me

and it needs to get out of my brain before I forget it, so there are gonna be a bunch of tweets (threaded) about this thing

As a junior prof everyone tells you “guard your time, protect your time, be selfish with your time” etc

But what they mean is that you should value your research (= WRITE MORE PAPERS, GET MOAR MONEY) over everything and anything else

And, real talk, my office door is a revolving door of students in need of help, mentoring, a supportive ear etc

And my email, FB messages, twitter DMs etc are a hot mess of people (WW, POC, ppl with disabilities) from all over the world who need help

And I spend a lot of time replying to those emails and DMs and talking to the students who show up at my door because THEY MATTER TO ME

The way that I prioritize my time has not gone unnoticed. And I get a lot of feedback suggesting that I close my door more often
