The mode in which emotionally troubled youth act on their feelings is gendered. That shouldn't be surprising when youth social environments are highly segregated by sex, and contact between the sexes is heavily policed.
Boys tend to be given a much longer leash, so troubled boys go out and find alcohol and drugs. Troubled girls, who are more often on a tight leash, find ways to act out their emotional pain without leaving home.
I'm using "girls" and "boys" here, without specifying whether I mean cis or not. With trans youth, it's complicated. Factors like a long/short leash and peer group in our AGAB pull one way, desire to emulate ways of being fucked up associated w/ our true gender pulls the other.
