Hey, just putting it out there that I will never contribute or RT a GoFundMe, or give charity to anyone I don't know personally. I don't have faith in my ability to tell a scam from genuine need in an online only context, so I don't engage with any of them.

I'm subscribed to a couple Twitch streams, and I'm open to subscribing to Patreons and the like. I'll also occasionally throw a few bucks to a oanhandler. But I made a firm rule, long ago, that I don't pay for sad stories.

Funny story about faceblindness- I once gave money to a panhandler who had screamed threats at me a week earlier for not giving her anything, bc I didn't realize it was the same person. Whoops! She got me.

I prefer giving to people who sing or play music, but I have no hard rules about panhandlers, except to ignore ones who are overtly harassing. I figure if someone is actually on the street asking for money it's a fair bet that they're worse off than I am.

Oh... if someone says they're hungry/need cash for food I buy them food. Not because I'm trying to withhold drug money from them, but bc I think it's funny.

I was in shelter in Boston with this real character named Renell. She'd panhandle in Harvard Square and regale me, timid and newly homeless, with stories.

I remember her, like it was yesterday, telling me you ask rich people for food so they give you money, but sometimes they do give you food. "'I'm eatin' like five, six dinnahs!" So I give food, as my private little remembrance of Renell from Boston saying "five, six dinnahs!"
