There was someone I met at a LGB youth group in Boston in the mid 90s, when I was in high school. They seemed very, old but in retrospect were probably in their 20s, at most 30s. I think they called themselves Sterling, or it might have been Starling.https://twitter.com/NiobiumEmpress/status/1369407638883233792 …

They were transfemme, and they wouldn't have used they/them pronouns bc it was '94-'96 and we didn't have those. I don't remember if they used she/her or he/him, but something they said indicated they were nonbinary. They were *so* kind. And... comfortable?

I was so in awe of them and just drawn to them... but I sort of memory-holed them as "one of the good ones" and just went on to become this majorly self-hating, closeted, TERF-adjacent asshole until I was much older than they would have been when I met them.

I REGRET not learning at 15-17 what this person, just a baby themselves, was trying to teach me about who our community is and how to love it and ourselves. I let them down, and I am sorry.

We have to try to at least love each other, because often no one else will.
