i do think it's interesting how some people can, under the right circumstances, make anonymous sources valuable. jason schreier is a great example of somebody whose sources obviously can't be revealed, but you know he's got the inside connection basically everywhere.
Oh, yeah, anonymous sources can be essential. But, I've found, that the one thing a layperson knows to do is ask for a psudonym/anonymity. So I consider it a service to the industry to gently try to talk them out of it if there's no real reason they need to be anonymous.
