As someone who really enjoys abstract argumentation, I learned when I was still quite young- in college, I believe- that in the thrill of winning a point of debate you can devolve into hectoring and berating someone why others look on, appalled at your boorishness.

It's really important to know when to pull back. In a real world (non debate club) setting, having a sense for when your point's been made and you're just beating a dead horse is as crucial to being an effective communicator as skillfully constructing the arguments themselves.
