IDK about the cycle with things like the R.Kelly documentary, the Woody Allen documentary, the Michael Jackson documentary... like, we knew those guys molested children back in the '90s. We have these "revelations" less because the information has changed than because we have.
I'm torn up about this. Is it better to let people have the figleaf of pretending they didn't know to enlist them in the project of not allowing this stuff again? My fear is that people will decide they don't have to care now, since they didn't then.
Yeah, I'm fine with us having these "revelations" as long as they help people understand the wider systems that facilitated these specific guys. These same problems will arise again. Feeling bad now serves no purpose unless we do better next time.
I’m afraid that it isn’t so much that we’ve changed as it is that the passage of time has made each seem more distant from us. Perhaps by confronting a horror in the distant past we convince ourselves that we will recognize it whenever we encounter it in our own lives. /end
