One of the main reasons I suspect that a lot of TERFs are self-hating closeted trans people (and yes, I know this is one of my least popular opinions) is because they focus on small clocky details of trans people's appearances the way trans people do.
Normal cis people with the usual amount of ambient transphobia SIMPLY DO NOT notice shoulder-to-hip ratios. I fucking promise you they don't. Nor do they hyper-scrutinize lip thinness/thickness, or brow line, or any of the tiny things trans people... and TERFs... worry about.
But it's not just that they notice these details. They weaponize them against trans people in the most sexist terms possible. So I become not simply short for a man but a scrawny unmanly weakling due to my stature and musculature. And trans women? Woo boy they cannot win.
A trans woman who's insufficiently feminine is mannish, but one who IS feminine is a sexist caricature of real womanhood which has NOTHING to do with femininity. Often the same trans woman can be both at the same time, because the point is to be hurtful, not consistent.
