In conservativeland it's perfectly okay to say whatever you want about Blacks, Spanish speakers, gays, trans folks. That's just talking about issues. But if you say something mean about PEOPLE *cough white men cough* well, that's nasty.
Adam Serwer's idea of Republican Herrenvolk explains a lot about this sort of behavior: only certain people are citizens/legitimate voters/literal human beings. The rest are illegitimate in a legal and social sense.
