I try to avoid insults no matter what, but if something slips out after I've been baited into a longer exchange I don't worry bc no one else is even reading. Delete the insult so it can't be RTed, exit gracefully, move on.

One last thing: Don't feel discouraged if someone gets under your skin and before you know it you've gone more replies in than your ideal. Your target audience hasn't seen it, so it doesn't matter.
