Tiers of "Getting Gud" at FPS games: - Understanding the meta - Executing on said understanding - Mastering movement - Perfecting an aiming style (snapping or tracking, but ideally both) - Learning as many adversary behaviors to counter them all effectively

Any advice on how to develop an aiming style? I've never managed to get anywhere with any FPS- and the last time I tried was Far Cry 3. I play a lot of really difficult platformers and roguelikes so it's not a "get gud" problem, I just can't get the hang of shooter gameplay.

(By not a "get gud" problem I mean, specifically, that I'm more than able to grind challenging gameplay until I improve- but FPS I've never really figured out how to improve.)

1/ The shit I find most people struggle with in shooters is having a sense of space, a thing that kind of requires you to make a mental map of where everything is in your immediate vicinity without it necessarily being in your FOV. Getting over that hump will allow you to--

2/ be able to move and aim at the same time without missing a beat. This is especially useful in advanced movement shooters like Destiny or Apex where verticality is added into the mix. On the aiming front, it really depends on preference and input method.

3/ MnK players can shoot mobile targets while stationary more easily because of the mouse, while controller players will jostle around the left stick in conjunction with the right to get the shot. The discrepancy between snapping and tracking depends also on playstyle.

4/ Aggressive players are partial to snapping because it is by fat the easiest method to get a quick kill when you're chasing down someone, whereas tracking is a lot more helpful for a passive playstyle.

5/ There's more detail I can go to, but I recommend you watch Ascendant Nomad on YouTube who does excellent videos on the topic with Destiny 2 as his main playground. I can't promise it will make you a god, but it will get that "Oh... Oh !" cog of self-improvement going.

I have never expected to become a god at any game, but in most games I can get to a level of competence if I take the time, and my block around FPS is irritating to me bc I want to be able to dip into the culture around them sometimes.

It's a lot of fun! When you ignore the segment of the population that lives and dies by fat K/D's and incredible kill tallies on every match, a lot of people are graceful with those who want to find their footing. If you pick up D2, lmk and we can run some shit together.

I'd love to except I'm currently without any gaming system except the Switch for complicated personal reasons- hopefully it'll be a possibility soon.
