I think my record of scupulously ethical, well researched, and factual journalism speaks for itself, Sarah. Would you believe I've never once had a source complain about being misquoted or treated unfairly in my reporting thus far? It's true!

Not really, I mean, sometimes people have to speak to skeptical journalists if they want their side of a story to be told. Being skeptical of a source surely can't disqualify me. Unless you're saying they don't trust me because I'm trans?

I’d say it’s more to do with the posts in this tweet. Do these tweets still reflect your views of people who have declined to speak to you?https://twitter.com/Exacerbati/status/1347721696891977730 …

Kitty @ExacerbatiEvan Urquhart, a writer for Slate, is approaching detransitioned women for a piece. It's important those approached know how this journalist speaks on public, professional social media about detransitioned women & others whose relationship w/transition has changed over time. pic.twitter.com/NGxHj2bA6o1 reply 3 retweets 17 likes -

Surely you'll appreciate that I've come under harsher criticism from the same community I believe words like "delusional" have even been used? And yet, I'd gladly listen to their point of view. Why wouldn't I expect that they would be equally willing to engage with me?

My view is a professional journalist is someone who can express themselves in ways that don’t come close to mocking, belittling & dismissing the views/experience of others, even if there’s strong disagreement on key issues. Your posts don’t reflect that. If you had posted/

Similarly about something as personal as this, that I’d lived through, I wouldn’t speak to you either. Not because you had me ‘bang to rights’ but because I couldn’t trust that you were capable of writing without that bias tainting & misrepresenting my words. I may well be /

being harsh on your professional abilities as a journalist, but when you ask someone to speak publicly about something so personal and often painful, it takes a lot to have trust that your words, your experience & your truth will be fairly represented. Straight off, you fail /

the ‘can I trust this person’ test solely off the back of those posts. That’s my take here. You are free to completely disregard it

I think that, respectfully, the same reasons detransitioners distrust me is why my sources trust me- my history of not being afraid to tell the truth is why those with an inside view of the truth know that I'll get their story out.

And, to be honest, I think people still in that community know it too. If they could dispute my facts, they could kill my story before it runs. The way to hurt me most would be by proving my facts wrong. Not taking that opportunity suggests something else is going on.

I can't force anyone to talk to me, and I'd never try. But I can offer people a fair and honest chance to destroy my story by showing me my facts are wrong. That's what I'm offering. There's still time to take me up on that if anyone has the ability to do so.

These attacks on me personally don't hurt my feelings. I never expected anything else. What would hurt me would be to give me a reason to distrust my sources or show my facts are in error. I care about the truth, which is why I've worked so hard to give them that chance.
