After trying to explain my big upcoming story to my parents I am now starting to appreciate just how difficult simply explaining who "detransitioners" are and what they believe to a lay audience is actually going to be.

Putting detransitioners in quotation marks tells me exactly what kind of bias you have and how trash this "big upcoming story" is going to be. Tell that to your parents.

Trans people expect their identities to be recognized and respected; reciprocity of that respect to others is a reasonable minimum - starting with detransitioners.
