Learned helplessness is a concept in psychology whereby, if you apply negative stimuli enough successive times, the subject will cease to struggle or make further attempts to resist.

Learned helplessness is demonstrated in the lab by shocking animals repeatedly until they eventually just sit there listlessly, doing nothing as they are shocked again and again, and by congress in January of 2021.
