I think modern photos taken in black and white are pretty much always worse than the colour equivalent, and usually only done to try and add some kind of "arty" veneer because the photo itself isn't very interesting

I am very, very willing to be wrong about this! I spoke to a photography enthusiast about it earlier and he said he prefers the "texture" in a black and white photo. I asked what that meant, he didn't really know

I think black and white helps photos where the composition is really good but the color is distracting for some reason (too much, too clashing, etc). But it's often used when the color is distracting and composition is nothing to write home about either- the arty veneer cases.

I don't know if I can find it, but the example I'm thinking of was kids on a playground- in color you focus on their clothes more but in b&w their facial expressions come more to the forefront.
