But, I was one of those people, albeit a mild one who mostly knew to keep my mouth shut. And, I feel a responsibility now I'm out of that way of thinking, to try and at least explain if not "come get" others like me who are still contributing to this horrible anti-trans hatred.
I've told this story before, but I credit Cathy Brennan with helping me avoid a full descent into TERFdomm and with planting an early seed for my transition. After I wrote a huge viral piece "Why I'm Still a Butch Lesbian" Brennan friended me on Facebook.
I accepted the friend request and the praise for my recent piece, and went on over to Brenann's Facebook page with no idea of who she was or what I would be confronting.
What I saw was so hateful, so virulent and evil, that I just instantly knew these were the bad guys. And if these were the bad guys, and they were reaching out to me... maybe there was something wrong with the directions I'd been going in. Seed planted. Thank you Cathy!
(Brennan blocked me within 24 hours of friending me bc I was defending trans people in her replies... which is so hilarious when I think back to how transphobic I was at the time... as shitty as I was I still wasn't having it with HER level of hatred.)
It's a funny story, but if I'd been love bombed by a slightly more subtle person it would all have gone completely differently, so I really do feel that there but for the grace of god etcetera.
