I think there's room for both possibilities to coexist: A) That a decent number of TERFs are closeted self-hating trans men. B) That sentiments we recognize as bearing the signature of closeted self-hating trans men have been replicated and become a prong of TERF ideology.
I wouldn't dream of suggesting Rowling is definitely a member of group A rather than a parroter of standard lines B, but it's certainly possible.
