I RTed this earlier but I want to reconsider this now, because it's worth noting that this may be true from JKR... but it's also a common TERF (specifically TERF) line, building off ideas transing kids who are vaguely GNC, trans as cool social we call contagion, etc.https://twitter.com/e_urq/status/1341419024568225792 …

We cannot take JKR's words at face value because the lens through which she views transition is not a true lens; it is cracked and badly distorted. Which isn't to say she is lying! But it is to say... be wary of that line, and be wary of how it colours your analysis.

Two nonexclusive possibilities are that she holds a sexist view of girls as lacking agency or identities, easily led in directionS they see others going, or that she clings to the illegitimacy of trans male identities because to admit their validity would be to accept herself.

I think a third possibility is one her ideological fellows suggest: that *all* kids are susceptible to an apparent overwhelming pressure to transition to fit societal norms of gender.

To the extent I've been able to follow transphobic ideology, that doesn't really seem to me to be the case. Maybe there's a small amount of lip service paid to that, but generally trans women are predatory adult tricksters and trans men are innocent children led astray.

Trans *kids* are all lumped together, often as not, though. There's a triple thing going on.
