The second belief- which is the Jesse Singal reasonable restrained transphobe position- is that some tiny number of legitimate trans men exist, but they are outnumbered by the many weak willed women who don't know their own minds and shouldn't make choices about their own bodies.
Can you spot the similarities between these two sets of beliefs about trans men?
It's important to understand that this differs from the reasonable restrained transphobe's belief about trans women. The RRT believes most trans women are valid, but the risk posed by a tiny number of abusers (from rapists to opportunistic athletes) are too great to ignore.
But if the not-really-trans-men were a teeny tiny minority, there'd be no reason to worry about them. The number has to be so large that the concerns of actual trans men can be a negligible afterthought. And it works because it fits a sexist notion of women lacking agency.
