You see the pattern in book after book. There's this amazing female character. She's doing everything the guys are doing, but better. She has some incredible insight that changes the course of the war, or whatever. And then, pop, she's gone crazy and is out of the game.
As I recall, in the first two books in the quartet he keeps that in check, but course corrects towards awful in the third one. I read the first three as a teen, and when I went back to them in adulthood but got a strong whiff of “we were just following orders” and noped out.
