I'm in the oldest Gen X group (the 90's = ages 25-35 for me). The veneer of cheerfulness was too thin & brittle to convince us. Mainstream entertainment felt desperate, shrill, phony, & insulting, propped up in front of crumbling reality. "Don't you love the 90's?" FUCK, NO.
I'm of the youngest Gen X group (HS class of 1996), and for me it felt like the desperate high times just before the fall... I never lacked the knowledge that the fall was coming.
Y'all had no reason not to see it coming... weirdly, some of your cohort didn't and still don't. I don't know what that would feel like.
