Americans aren't racist they just hate trans people isn't the ringing defense some people seem to think.

The extent to which "trans" functions as a dog whistle for racism is underrated. People complain about being forced to call women men bc they don't think they can get away with saying they want to use racial slurs. What, you thought they cared about trans issues that much?

This isn't to say there isn't a small group of rabid single -ssue anti-trans voters. But "trans rights" functions in the broader political conversation as a stand in for "identity politics is going too far" and THAT is not fundamentally about trans people at all.
