I had a pre-teen foster kid who declared they were asexual. Did I think that was going to be permanent? Nah. Easy enough to affirm and support them anyway, and if I'm wrong I won't have to apologize for not having done so.

I think it's fine for people's identities to change, including people who are kids! I also think there's something potentially upsetting to 11-year-olds about presenting being a typical 11-year-old as somehow connected to being an atypical adult.

In the case of my kid they were already a gender dysphoric autistic youth, so adding another queer-ish identity a bit prematurely made a lot of sense. It's really the preteen experience to suddenly feel weird and different, and to resist being told how normal that is, right?
