If conservatives had gotten behind equal civil unions in the early 2000s we might not have same-sex marriage rights today. If cons wanted that, they shoulda gone for it while it was an available middle ground, instead of opposing gay families in any form.
Now, it's too late. Which is good! (But it's definitely too late- you can't unmarry people now.)
